While the industry-wide incidence of cork-derived taint continues to fall the spotlight has now turned to the problems affecting wines sealed with screwcaps, according to a survey conducted at this year International Wine Challenge.

CORK AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Three-quarters of the western Mediterranean’s cork oak forests could be lost within ten years, threatening an economic and environmental crisis, according to a new World Wildlife Fund (WWF) report.

The environmental benefits of cork have been trumpeted by a wide range of organisations, but none has spoken louder or for longer then the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). The RSPB website is a fountain of knowledge on the global benefit of the world’s cork oak forests.

PROCORK COMES UP TRUMPS AGAIN
New tests by the Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) have confirmed Australian membrane cork ProCork is the best performing wine bottle closure across a range of key indicators. The study, which tested three-year-old wine, also revealed the lack of permeability of screwcap closures makes wine prone to a chemical reaction known as reduction.
